alternative building methods

Many South Africans live in tin shacks, which are extremely hot in summer, very cold in winter and have a tendency to burn due to the wooden frame, cardboard lined walls and the use of paraffin for lighting and cooking. They are also expensive for the area and often of poor quality.Cob houses are one of the oldest forms of building.  They can be made from local materials at low cost, do not burn and keep a moderate temperature. At the SLC the CWBR has embarked on a program to teach people the correct methods of cob building, in order that more and more people will have access to more comfortable homes.

Practical demonstrations are given, which are hands on, and people of all ages can get involved.

Cob cannot only be used for houses, but to build ovens, chicken coops and sheep pens.
