This crowd fundraiser is designed to create international and local awareness of Biosphere Reserves, raise funds to allow all communities to benefit from Biosphere eco-educational outings, and to create careers and stimulate entrepreneurs.

Numerous people, especially children, have never had the opportunity to extend their knowledge of the environment and expand their horizons through travel. Thousands live in abject poverty and have never travelled more than an hour away from their homes. The unequal access to nature and green spaces, also known as environmental inequality, has adverse impacts on people. Most of the time these poor neighbourhoods are locate next to industrial areas or factories, thus causing the people more likely to be exposed to harmful pollutants and toxics. Self-esteem and expectations are low as there is no vision of what can be achieved, or confidence in what the people are personally capable of. This can be changed by giving youth the possibility to participate in our eco-educational activities and camps within the Biosphere Reserves.

By donating a minimum of 5 euros, using your name and e-mail as a reference, you can be chosen, by the end of February, to join a 30-day-trip to South Africa! Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve offers the whole trip for two people, which includes all expenses*. The destinations include Cape Town, the Biosphere Reserves of the Western Cape, Garden Route, Addo Elephant Park, the Karoo and Cape West Coast.

You will experience a vast cross section of all the places above, ranging from 5 Star Game Lodges to Self-catering Mountain Cottages. The activities vary from Bungee Jumping to Shark Diving, Surfing, Hiking, Kayaking, Fishing, Beach Barbecues, Museums, Kite surfing, Skydiving, Animal farms, CWBR projects, as well as relaxing and watching elephants at safaris. The choice will be yours.

CWBR would ask visitors to please write a short report about the observations and all seen and experienced things during the trip, which will then be published on the One Planet and Cape Winelands Biosphere websites for all other partners and contributors to read. The visitor may also choose between filming or picturing the trip. You will be supplied with equipment for this purpose, or if you prefer, we will send a photographer.

The footage can then be turned into an after-movie of the trip. In this way, One Planet and CWBR will provide total transparency and accountability.

*Return flights from Europe, 30-day-accommodation, transportation within the country, meals, essential equipment, and activities as listed above.

One Planet – Cape Winelands Biosphere Fundraiser

The project will be co-ordinated and run through the One Planet Foundation in Amersfoord, The Netherlands.

One Planet is a tax-exempt Foundation in The Netherlands whose mission is to promote sustainability. For the Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve, One Planet acts as a pipeline for European partners to participate and invest in specific sustainability projects of the CWBR. One Planet established a separate bank account for these projects. 100% of the funds collected into this account go to CWBR. CWBR is responsible for the usage of these funds, for transparency and for reporting on spending and results achieved. The CWBR project reports will be available to partners and investors on the One Planet website. There you can find exactly where the money has been spent and what has been achieved. Each project has a short factsheet which is periodically updated, containing: project description, goal, photos, expertise and/or funding requirements, status of completion, student-opportunities and contact person. Therefore, we confirm a 100% transparency, and spending the funds only on the purpose of educating and activating local children, and encouraging them to explore nature.

Transparency and accountability

Each year CWBR and One Planet will invite one donor and a partner to the One Planet – Cape Winelands Biosphere Fundraiser. The lucky donor will be randomly pulled out of a hat. At the cost of CWBR, this person (+ avec) will be given return flight tickets from Europe to Cape Town. In addition to this the accommodation, transport in South Africa, preferred activities* and visits to all CWBR projects are all included in the package.

Terms and conditions

The 30-day trip will include field visits, meetings with anyone involved in the projects, and an insight into all financial transactions and accounts. The visitor will have access to anything he or she wishes to see at CWBR. One Planet and CWBR kindly ask the visitors to write a report about the observations and experiences during the trip, which will then be published on the One Planet and Cape Winelands Biosphere websites for all other partners and contributors to read. In addition to this, the visitor may choose between filming and picturing the trip, or CWBR can book a professional team to do so. The footage can then be turned into an after-movie of the trip. In this way, One Planet and CWBR will provide total transparency and accountability.

The visitors may extend the visit beyond the 30 days at their own cost. The return flight tickets are flexible and can be arranged to suit the visitor. The visitors can have as much time as wished for private visits during the 30 days. CWBR only asks for independent reviewing and reporting on the CWBR activities for the benefit of the other partners and contributors, and the rest of the visitors’ time in South Africa can be spent however they wish!
